Joy…Depression….Death – Robin Williams!

Wonder what pains were hidden behind that smiling visage!

Williams’ suicide raises that age-old question of what constitutes real happiness?

Sad that one who gave so much joy to others could go through chronic depression and a sad death.

Proof yet again that fame, money and success doesn’t guarantee lifelong bliss.

Time to stop, breathe and think what’s important….

Resolutions? Nah – Habits, 2014

Week one gone….Whilst many of your resolutions may have crumbled, I’ve not even started baking mine. Lazy bones, blood and muscles were bundled together by the nurse 3 decades back & handed over to my mom.

Anyways, the word Resolution is like Mt.  Everest – surmounted by only a few dedicated Norgays or Hillarys …so no more gargantuan promises like acquiring a shredded torso or writing a novel.

3 simple habits to follow:
– Write a paragraph daily, even if for self consumption
– Exercise daily, even if only a 10 min walk
– Read a book daily, even if just a page

Results will follow if they have to…So, I make a resolution 😦 to form these daily habits!

Laal Haraa Neela Peela…..

Spoiler Alert…3/5

Ram Leela is a flawed SLB painting on Shakespearan canvas.

Pick up the plot of Romeo-Juliet, add a dash of violent Gujju flavour, rehash Hum Dil De Chuke’s music, garnish with good actors playing unidimensional, crazy characters and voila… Your greasy gravy is ready.

The movie starts off with a kiss & bang, continues with bang bang and ends with a kiss bang bang bang….and that’s where the problem lies. There r no breathers, the star-crossed ‘lust’ers have no reason to fall in love or get separated or finally knock each other out. Nor do their pig-headed families!

Fantastic dialogues, cinematography and excellent acting by Ranveer, Deepika & the entire cast save the day…But the real surprise package is Supriya Pathak as Godmother….

SLB creates an energetic ambience in the first hour which becomes tedious because of random plot movements, dozen songs and thousand gunshots…

Go watch it once if u liked Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Ishaqzaade or Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. This one’s a medley of all 3.

The monk who bought back his Ferrari!

Wonder why spiritual robes are needed if d soul wants materialistic salvation?
Check out the iphone in his hand….

phata poster nikla ZERO!

Aryabhatta invented Shahid Kapoor centuries ago, Rajkumar Santoshi reinvents him this Friday.

The director’s comedies are getting formulaic with every outing.

(A)naath heroine + (B)uffoon hero – (C)aricaturish villain = (D)umb paper-thin plot.

A can be a Raveena, Katrina or Ileana. And you can replace B with Salman, Ranbir or Shahid to get the 3 comedies.

In PPNH, Shahid is his average self and Dcruz looks like a dream & dubs like a nightmare. Wish Saurabh Shukla as the don had a meatier role – miss Teja from 20 years back. Salman and Nargis Fakhri’s 3D lips in a guest appearance are highlights of the movie.

Laugh-out loud moments (Santoshi’s quirky dialogues) are few & far between. The 2nd half suddenly becomes an emotional drama & the screenplay, especially the mother-son angle is so 80s. The music is boring and so is the action.

Give this one a skip, rent Andaz Apna Apna & relive the original ‘Hai Laas’ and ‘Ooi Maas’!

Antarctica: 15th Dec: Love at first sight!

Half-Moon Island and Deception Island

The inadequacy of words & pictures is amplified today. How can anyone be prepared for a place like Antarctica?
Surreal feeling when our feet plonked on the coldest, driest & windiest part of our planet. A long-cherished dream fulfilled. Strangely enough a part of me lived and died today….

Penguins rule this terrain. They build highways to navigate up the plateau & down to the calm sea for their daily quota of bread, butter & jam. Stealing is rampant around the pebbled nests – each penguin a bigger scamster than the other. And all this is done while protecting their eggs from the predatory Scua birds.

Bright, blue lines trickle out of the icy glaciers and snow-sculpted structures around. Reminds one of the cool minty toothpaste ads, which have blue gel oozing out of the tube.
I’m so sad when we’re asked to get-off the island & onto our zodiacs to return to the ship. I’ve fallen in pure love with an inanimate objet for the first time. The vast white wiLderness has an outer-world tranquility, never experienced before. How will I be able to survive with humans in the plasticity of Dubai, now?!

Deception island next. Have foolishly agreed to participate in the polar plunge.
Once-in-a-lifetime chance to take a bath in the Antarctic waters. (albeit in a lake created by an active volcano)

Guts is just a fine line away for sheer stupidity. Wished myself luck and stripped down to bare essentials.
The water wasn’t substantially cold for the 1st 2 steps…The sulphur from the active volcano ensured a foggy, farty air all around, slightly warm for these conditions. Step 3 and then suddenly thousand cold pins pierce the feet. If this is what volcanic antarctic wafers fed like, dread to think how it’ll beneath the colder peninsula down south. Brrrrr..

Anyway, fear has been drowned into the Antarctic Ocean… Need to transmute this strong will to other spheres of life. Orgasmic day 1 comes to an end…

Planes, Trains & Quantum gibberish…

Antarctica Day 0 – Flight to Argentina

Time space conundrum plays on the mind.
14 hours from Dubai to Brazil & then another 4 to Buenos Aires makes me realize how ironically slow & boring air travel really is.

Reminds me of the good old days when I used to look forward to the exciting 2-day train journeys from one Indian city to another. The buying of magazines from railway platforms, the trrding trrding sound of the cold drink guy, the sizzling omlette bread & the mayhem of umpteen other vendors peddling their wares, in the cramped compartments. And to top it all, the inadvertent presence of that one beautiful femme fatale, stretching and yawning on the opposite berth.
But the most crucial aspect I miss in this jet age is the raw, earthy feeling of cold, night breeze at the open window, as Iush Indian villages pass by.

Anyways coming back to today, the train chick has been replaced by a 6 decade old Lebanese nanny on my side whose command over English is as brilliant as mine over Quantum mechanics.
She gets up every hour & noticing my annoyance apologises profusely for “molesting” me?!

To avoid this incessant molestation, I concentrate on the quest documentaries which reiterate the fact that everything in life, including science is so subjective & just a viewpoint of a supposedly superior minority.
Newton’s gravity was the bible until Einstein’s relativity broke through the simplistic laws of physics. He created this monstrously complex crackshit about relativity, and then the seemingly harmless Hawking wheelchaired all over him & all his predecessors. But why only curse the incomprehensible scientists. lsn’t History, Religion, Geography & even life itself just random theories & perspectives of x individuals? South Pole for us might be a northern point for a starship deep in the space abyss below.
USA invasion for legit democratic rights of the middle eastern people is already being written in many history books as a tyrant’s loot for oil.

Anyways enough rambling for the day. Flowing through different time Zones & food zones is making me sleepy. Catch Buenos Aires tomorrow.
